As someone who enjoys going to the movies every now and then as a detox, it is disheartening to see the same comic book movies take over two or more theaters at my local cinema for a couple of months.

Scorsese is a director,  he has won academy awards for his work, thousands of film enthusiasts adore his work and his ability to tell stories of the past, but he has been more synonymous with saying that "marvel movies are not cinema", and with the recent premieres of new comic book movies I keep getting reminded of his words.

As someone who grew up loving superheroes and the movies that entertained me throughout my childhood and as someone who has grown up to love the art of storytelling through the film I feel somewhat conflicted about what I am supposed to feel about the state of it all. I have found it harder to see independent movies not just because of the pandemic but also because most commercial theaters would rather show blockbusters that would be less of a risk and more guarantees of profit.

As someone who's currently learning and falling more in love with the film I am uncertain of my place in its creative space, I am finding it hard to see where my passion for character stories will be able to bring me into a world so in love with blockbusters and spectacles. I just hope there's still love from the general public for movies that are not as grandiose as superhero movies.
